Changes to CQB Limits and Rules for Nordic Milsim Events

We are considering raising the "CQB limit" from 1.2 J to 1.5 J to better shape our milsim events to our desired play style. We aim to create company-level engagements, where each faction is divided into platoons. More details on this will follow in later posts.

In a platoon, various weapon systems play a crucial role in achieving the desired combat effectiveness as well as experience. Each platoon will be divided into squads of about 10 players, where the configuration of weapon systems will also be regulated, meaning how many in the squad can use a certain weapon type.

Our goals include:

  1. Weapon systems should be able to perform their intended tasks. For example, in the current Swedish system, MMGs have no significance compared to LMGs.

  2. (Most) players should not need to switch weapon systems during urban combat or at night.

  3. All weapons, except sniper/DMR, should be able to fire full auto and all carbines and LMGs should have the same power level for simplicity, balance, and realism.

New Classifications

  • Carbine/LMG – Max 1.5 J (or less) – minimum engagement distance 0 m

  • MMG – Max 2.1 J (or less) – minimum engagement distance 20 m

  • DMR – Max 2.4 J (or less) – minimum engagement distance 20 m

A significant change is that ammunition will be a resource in the game. As organizers, we will provide all the ammunition and supply players with "ammo resupply." This means that even though players can shoot full auto, they must think strategically about their ammunition usage. At the start of the game, for example, a carbine shooter/assaulter receives 500 rounds, an LMG 1500, and an MMG 3000. This creates a new game mechanic where players must plan their ammunition carefully and distribute it according to the squad's needs and the effectiveness of the weapon systems.

In short, CQB (1.2 J) and assault (1.7 J) are replaced by a unified class "carbine/LMG" at 1.5 J.

Safety Aspects

Milsim West in the USA has used this system for over 20 years without issues, and other countries also have higher J limits for CQB, not to mention paintball in Sweden. Dental injuries are often caused by inadequate protective equipment, and skin injuries depend on where the BB hits and the BB's weight. The risk of bleeding wounds on the skin does not disappear even in the current system. Additionally, we as organizers now control the weights of the BB´s.

Most shots are fired from a distance greater than 0 meters, and we do not shoot each other at point-blank range, especially in forest environments. In our experience, most engagements occur at a distance of more than 10 meters, which with 1.5 J now will hit with less force than 1.7 J (in the current system).

Comparison: 1.2, 1.7 vs 1.5 J

There are advantages to keeping the current system; players do not need to tinker with their guns, it is generally the same system in other places nationally, and 1.2 J can feel safer in close contact. However, problems arise when players have to fumble with a side-arm, the game "pauses" to figure out who can enter a building and who cannot, classes within the classes are created, and some players simply cannot accomplish tasks as they could in real life. There is also nothing that says you can´t be under the limit, just not above.

We have considered only using one of the current classes within the 2020 table for our carbine/LMG shooters. However, we think 1.2 J is too little in wooded terrain especially for LMG shooters, while 1.7 J is a bit too much in CQB. Hence, we have found a middle ground at 1.5 J, which has already been tested for several years under Milsim West's direction.

We believe these changes will make our games more dynamic and realistic.

Next event, 18-20 October, “Assault on Arlanda”

For our upcoming event Assault on Arlanda we will slowly move towards implementing this system to see how it works out and retrieve player feedback. During this event we will raise the “CQB-limit” to 1.5J, but we will not remove the 1.7 class.

If you wish, you can join the for the event Assault on Arlanda with 1.7J carbine or LMG. You will then play under the old system of 10m minimum engagement distance. You are however obligated to wear a side arm.

Sign up to the event opens on August 25th.
